Comparison of Tagalog and Iloko

About this record

This document is the doctoral dissertation of Cecilio Lopez, a pioneering Filipino linguist often regarded as the "Father of Philippine Linguistics." It was submitted to the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Hamburg (Germany) in 1928. The work represents a pioneer attempt to present a systematic linguistic comparison of two major Philippine languages, Tagalog and Iloko , to the scientific world. The methodology involves a detailed survey of phonetic, morphological, and lexical factors , using the reconstructed Original Indonesian (OrIN) sound-system as the basis for comparison, following the work of Otto Dempwolff. The dissertation highlights the relationship between Philippine languages and other Indonesian sub-groups. Lopez dedicated the work to his teacher, Professor Otto Scheerer of the University of the Philippines , under whose guidance he acquired the "cornerstone" of his linguistic studies. This dissertation is a foundational text in the formal, scientific study of Philippine languages by a Filipino scholar.

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes. APA Citation (7th Edition): Lopez, C. (1928). Comparison of Tagalog and Iloko (Doctoral dissertation, University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany).
