A survey of the educational system of the Philippine Islands

About this record

This document is the comprehensive report of the Board of Educational Survey and its Educational Survey Commission, authorized by the Philippine Legislature under Acts 3162 and 3196. Commission Director Paul Monroe submitted the report in 1925, during the American colonial period of the Philippine Islands. The survey's main purpose was to evaluate the accomplishments of the public school system after approximately twenty-five years of American administration and to propose methods for its improvement. The report describes the massive growth of the system, which provided elementary and secondary education to over 1,100,000 pupils , but also highlights the systemic challenges of instruction conducted in a foreign language (English), an under-trained teaching staff, and insufficient funding. Its publication marks a significant effort to analyze and reform the foundations of American-style public education in the Philippines.

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes. APA Citation: Board of Educational Survey. (1925). A survey of the educational system of the Philippine Islands. Bureau of Printing.
