About this record

This document is a foundational publication by the Institute of National Language (Surian ng Wikang Pambansa), a key governmental body established during the Philippine Commonwealth era to develop the national language. Published in December 1938 as Volume 4, Number 11 of its series, the document contains a lecture by author and novelist Teodoro Virrey titled "Ang Pelikulang Tagalog" (The Tagalog Film/Cinema), which was delivered at the University of the Philippines. The lecture argues that the nascent Tagalog film industry was, at the time, the single most effective tool for disseminating and popularizing Tagalog as the chosen basis for the national language, reaching non-Tagalog speakers across the entire archipelago more efficiently than traditional printed media. The text provides an invaluable look at Philippine cultural development and language policy just before World War II, illustrating the critical role of mass media in establishing national identity and linguistic unity.

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes. APA Citation: Virrey, T. (1938). Ang Pelikulang Tagalog. (Publications of the Institute of National Language, Vol. 4, No. 11). Bureau of Printing.
