José Toribio Medina's Historia de la Imprenta en los antiguos dominios españoles de América y Oceanía is a foundational work in Americanist and Oceanian bibliography. This specific volume is a compilation of the author's extensive, previously dispersed historical and bibliographical studies concerning the development of the printing press in the vast former Spanish colonies. Medina, a prolific Chilean historian and scholar, originally conceived a plan to create a general history of printing in Spanish America, which this collected work aims to realize. It details the introduction, evolution, and legislation surrounding the press, including in early centers like Mexico and Lima. This edition was published by the Fondo Histórico y Bibliográfico José Toribio Medina , a permanent fund established by the Chilean government in 1952 (Ley N° 10.361) to commemorate the centenary of his birth and ensure the dissemination of his monumental works.
