"The Portal 1940" is the official yearbook for the 1939–1940 academic year, published by the students of Silliman University in Dumaguete, Philippine Islands. The volume features a message from new President Arthur L. Carson , who describes the distinct "Silliman spirit" as being marked by "clean sport, clean living, and the democratic way of doing things". Significantly, the yearbook includes the poem "THROUGH EDUCATION OUR MOTHERLAND RECEIVES LIGHT" by national hero Dr. Jose Rizal , underscoring the university's role in the intellectual and moral development of the future Philippine Commonwealth. The volume details the Administration and Faculty, including the Deans of colleges such as Law, Education, and Theology , and profiles seniors across various departments.
