"The Portal 1949" is the official yearbook for the 1948–1949 academic year at Silliman University. Published by the Senior Class, this volume is dedicated "To the Youth of the Land" and uses the nationalist poetry of R. Zulueta da Costa's "Like the Molave and Other Poems" as its central theme, urging the youth to be a nation "like the molave, firm, resilient, staunch". This emphasis on strength and resilience reflects the post-World War II period in the newly independent Philippines. The yearbook documents the university's leadership under President Arthur L. Carson and features detailed sections on the Administration and Faculty , the Graduate School , College of Law , College of Arts and Sciences , and student profiles across all major departments, including a large group of preparatory medicine students. It stands as a vital record of student life and institutional recovery in the immediate post-war era.
