This hymnal was created in the mid-1930s by the Hymnal Committee of the National Christian Council to fulfill a significant demand for a new, comprehensive collection of hymns for the Evangelical churches in the Philippine Islands. It was intended to help spread the Christian faith, specifically in the Bisaya-speaking regions. The translation work, which spanned nearly ten years, aimed to preserve the spirit and theological meaning of the original English hymns while using clear and natural Cebuano/Bisaya that was easy to sing. The Cebuano edition, published in 1936 by Silliman Press in Dumaguete, P.I., was a collaborative work representing a major contribution to the liturgy and cultural adaptation of Evangelical Christianity in the central and southern Philippines.
