About this record

This document is a foundational textbook published by the Bureau of Education during the Commonwealth of the Philippines era. It was developed as a major step in the revision of the literature curriculum for academic high schools and normal schools. The work holds historical significance as it represents the first serious effort by the government to use exclusively Filipino literary contributions written in English as required subject matter for classroom instruction in secondary schools. The compilation was intended to both meet the specific needs of secondary students and to serve as an incentive for a greater quantity and higher quality of creative writing in English by Filipino authors. The 1937 date places its publication shortly before World War II, illustrating the country’s pedagogical and cultural priorities during its transition to full independence.

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes.
