This volume is part of a monumental 55-volume compilation of primary source documents detailing the history of the Philippines under Spanish rule. Volume II focuses on the crucial period of early Spanish attempts at colonization, spanning from 1521 to 1569. It covers the failed expeditions of García de Loaisa, Álvaro de Saavedra, and Ruy Lopez de Villalobos. The volume culminates with the preparation and initial phase of the successful expedition led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, which established the first permanent Spanish settlement in 1564 and ushered in the continuous Spanish occupation of the archipelago. The compiled documents, translated from their originals, provide contemporaneous insights into the political, economic, commercial, and religious conditions of the islands and detail the constant tensions between Spanish and Portuguese territorial claims during the 16th century.
