About this record

This document is the title page for Volume I of Informe sobre el estado de las Islas Filipinas en 1842, a critical report written by Spanish diplomat and intellectual Sinibaldo de Mas y Sans (1809–1868). Published in Madrid in January 1843, the report details the economic, social, and political conditions of the Spanish colony of the Philippines. De Mas, who had been sent to the islands for observation, produced a confidential section (the Informe Secreto or Secret Report) that controversially proposed several radical reforms, including the eventual, gradual independence of the Philippines, as he believed the colony was becoming an unsustainable burden for Spain. The open section, of which this is the first volume, provided a detailed census and an analysis of the colonial government and commerce. For Silliman University, a prominent educational institution in the Philippines, this volume represents a key primary source document on the country's history during the late Spanish colonial era, offering insight into the political and socio-economic environment that preceded the eventual rise of Filipino nationalism.

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes. 485 pages : illustrations Language Translation of the Title: Report on the Status of the Philippine Islands in 1842 (Volume I) Madrid, Enero de 1843.
