Historia de Mindanao y Joló.

This document is the title page of the 1897 re-publication of Historia de Mindanao y Joló (History of Mindanao and Jolo). The core work was authored by Padre Francisco Combés (1620–1665), a Jesuit missionary who served in the Philippines, and was originally published in Madrid in 1667. This eight-book treatise is one of the most foundational and comprehensive early Spanish accounts of the southern Philippines, detailing its geography, the ethnic, social, political, and religious characteristics of its inhabitants, and the complexities of the Spanish presence and the Jesuit missionary efforts. It is a critical source on the Moro Wars, the establishment of the Zamboanga fort, and the Spanish struggle to convert and control the region's predominantly Muslim communities. The 1897 edition, which this title page represents, was brought back to light with the extensive collaboration of Padre Pablo Pastells, S.J., and Wenceslao Emilio Retana. Pastells and Retana were two of the most significant late-19th-century scholars of Philippine history. Their republication of Combés' work—at a time of great political and intellectual ferment just before the end of the Spanish colonial era—underscores the document's enduring historical value. Retana, a noted bibliographer and Hispanist, financed the printing of 500 copies of this edition. The presence of a Silliman University Library stamp on the page establishes its direct relevance to the institution's history and its role as a key repository of Filipiniana, linking the university to primary source material documenting over three centuries of Philippine history, particularly in the southern islands.
