This document, titled Terrain Handbook 45: Batangas (S.W. Luzon), was produced by the Allied Geographical Section (AGS) of the Southwest Pacific Area (SWPA) command, under the authority of General MacArthur, on November 30, 1944. It is a restricted geographical intelligence report intended for Allied staffs' operational and planning purposes during the final phase of World War II in the Pacific. The handbook provides detailed information on the topography, coastal conditions, ports, roads, trails, airfields, population, and resources of Batangas and Cavite Provinces in the Philippines. The report emphasizes the region's military significance as it commands the critical southern overland and water approaches to Manila. Compiled shortly after the American landings on Leyte and as a prelude to the major invasion of Luzon, the document was directly relevant to the U.S. Eighth Army's landing at Nasugbu, which would secure the corridor through Batangas and Cavite towards the capital.
