This volume is the revised and extended English translation of Twenty Years in the Philippines by Paul P. de la Gironière, first published in 1854 by Harper & Brothers, Publishers, in New York. De la Gironière, identified on the title page as a "Chevalier of the Order of the Legion of Honor," was a French adventurer and physician who resided in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period, establishing an extensive estate known as Jala-Jala on the shores of Laguna de Bay. His memoir provides a personal and highly descriptive, albeit subjective and often sensationalized, account of life, customs, natural history, and colonial society in the Philippines in the early-to-mid 19th century. The work is a significant primary source for understanding European perceptions of the archipelago and the economic and social conditions under Spanish rule before the liberal and nationalistic movements of the late 19th century.
