About this record

Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos en las islas y Tierra Firme del Mar Océano is Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas’s official, foundational history of the Spanish Empire in the New World, originally published between 1601 and 1615. Herrera, serving as the Chronicler Major of the Indies for the Spanish Crown, was granted unrestricted access to royal documents, reports, and private correspondence, allowing him to synthesize an unparalleled account of the conquest. The work details the initial thirty-nine years of Spanish expansion, covering events from the first voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492 up to the year 1531. It covers the discovery of new lands, the establishment of early settlements like Santo Domingo, and the key figures and conflicts of the age of exploration, including the early life of Hernán Cortés and the discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The volume provided is a 1934 edition (Tomo II), published by the Royal Academy of History in Madrid, which includes scholarly notes by academic Ángel de Altolaguirre y Duvale. The Historia General remains an indispensable primary source for historians studying the Spanish perspective on the early governance, administration, and evangelical efforts in the Americas.

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes.
