Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos en las Islas y Tierra Firme del Mar Océano (Tomo IV, Década Segunda)

de Herrera, Antonio

About this record

This volume represents the Second Decade (Volume IV of this edition) of the monumental Historia General written by Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, the official Chronicler of the Indies (Coronista Mayor) for the Spanish Crown. The original work, published in the early 17th century, is one of the most critical and comprehensive chronicles detailing the first century of Spain’s presence in the Americas. The text within this specific volume focuses on events between approximately 1515 and 1520. Key historical events covered include: The contentious governorship of Pedrarias Dávila in Castilla del Oro (Panama) and the eventual execution of Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The exploration of the Río de la Plata by Juan Díaz de Solís and attempts to settle Florida by Juan Ponce de León. The initial voyages of Juan de Grijalba and the beginning of Hernán Cortés's conquest of New Spain (Mexico), including his arrival at San Juan de Ulúa. The uprising of the Indigenous cacique Don Enrique in Española. Herrera's chronicle is vital because, in compiling it as an official history, he synthesized information from various contemporary documents, letters, and the unpublished manuscripts of earlier chroniclers, such as Bartolomé de las Casas.

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes.
