The Portal 1922

About this record

The Portal 1922 is the fifth volume of the Silliman Portal, published by the Senior Class of 1922, and documents the school year 1921-1922. The class dedicated the volume to their parents and the Faculty, the latter of whom provided "constant striving for the success of the Class of 1922". The publication provides a detailed history of the institution, from its 1901 founding by Dr. Horace B. Silliman with only fifteen students to its recognized status in 1910 by the Philippine government, which authorized it to grant degrees. The class faced a crisis when the Under Secretary of Public Instruction issued an order in October 1921 stopping the conferral of two-year A.B. degrees after 1921. This news caused "great disorder" and led some members to leave due to financial constraints, but the remaining members were later assured by a telegram that they could still graduate with the Bachelor of Arts degree. The yearbook documents this period of uncertainty and the class's eventual triumph, as reflected in their motto: "TRY, TRUST, TRIUMPH!".

The book is considered valuable. It is advised that researchers use digital copy rather than physical books for preservation purposes. 128 Pages, Illustrations, Photos Sill. 317.8 Si3 1922
