This dictionary is a comprehensive reference work covering approximately 25,000 Cebuano roots, compiled by John U. Wolff and a staff of over one hundred persons over an eleven-year period. It was published in March 1972 as Data Paper: Number 87 of the Southeast Asia Program, Department of Asian Studies, Cornell University. The work was supported by grants from Cornell University, the United States Office of Education, the American Council of Learned Societies, and The Asia Society. It was a joint publication of the Cornell University Southeast Asia Program and the Linguistic Society of the Philippines. The dictionary is a significant contribution to Philippine linguistics, focusing on Cebuano Visayan, the language of the central Philippines and large parts of Mindanao. The publication reflects the institution's commitment (Cornell's Southeast Asia Program) to inter-disciplinary studies and intensive training in the major languages of the region.
