This document is a critical text from the Propaganda Movement of the late 19th-century Philippines. Authored by the prominent Filipino intellectual Pedro Alejandro Paterno, it was published in Madrid in 1892 as a scholarly and political counter-argument to the writings of the Spanish cleric Fr. R. Martínez Vigil. Martínez Vigil had published articles questioning or diminishing the extent of pre-colonial Filipino civilization. Paterno's work asserts the inherent nobility and advanced nature of the ancient Tagalog civilization and argues for its capacity to readily adopt Christianity and Spanish culture. It served as a powerful defense of the Filipino people's intellect and dignity, directly challenging Spanish colonial paternalism that often characterized Filipinos as childlike or inferior. Its creation and publication are vital to understanding the rise of Filipino national consciousness and the intellectual debates that preceded the Philippine Revolution. It is a key primary source for studying the cultural and political discourse between Filipino reformists and colonial authorities.
