This document is a Tagalog awit (a metrical tale in dodecasyllabic quatrains), representing one of the most culturally significant and popular colonial romances in Philippine literary history. It is an anonymous versification and adaptation of the European medieval legend, Historia de Carlomagno y de los Doce Pares de Francia, which was introduced during the Spanish colonial period and became a foundational narrative for the masses. The narrative follows Emperor Charlemagne (Carlo Magno) and his legendary paladins, the Twelve Peers (Doce Pares), as they wage wars for Christianity, including encounters with the Saracen giant Fierabras and his sister Floripes. The tale culminates in the famed tragedy at Roncesvalles, where the peers, led by Roldan and Oliveros, are slaughtered due to the fatal betrayal of the traitor Galalon. These metrical romances were a primary form of reading material for Filipinos in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
