Sands and Coral is the long-running annual student literary journal of Silliman University, situated in Dumaguete City, Philippines. The 1967 edition (Volume 17) captures a significant moment of aesthetic matureness and intergenerational continuity within the university’s world-renowned creative writing hub. Returning to the guidance of National Artist for Literature Edith L. Tiempo as adviser, this volume introduces notable emerging talents alongside established voices. It features the literary debut of Rowena Tiempo (daughter of Edilberto and Edith Tiempo), capturing early signs of the family’s generational impact on Philippine letters. Structurally diverse, this issue contains short stories by Rogelio H. Tangara and Edgar Libre-Griño, and multi-faceted poetic and translation works—such as faculty member Albert Faurot’s translations of classical Chinese verse. Serving as an invaluable institutional and cultural repository, this issue documents how mid-20th-century post-war creative writing in English flourished in Dumaguete, bridging regional sensibilities with cosmopolitan cross-cultural exchanges.
