Teodoro M. Kalaw was a nationalist scholar, historian, journalist, and statesman during the American colonial era in the Philippines, famously known as the "Father of the Philippine Library System". Dietario Espiritual (Spiritual Diary) is a compilation of his daily, concise, and reflective essays titled "Mi Página Diaria" ("My Daily Page") that originally ran in the Spanish-language newspaper La Vanguardia from June 1926 to October 1927. The collection was published in book form in 1930 at the insistence of his wife and readers. The essays explore a wide range of social, political, and moral subjects relevant to the Filipino populace of the time, including nationalism, democracy, education, and the need to elevate the "life of the spirit". This work serves as an important record of the intellectual discourse in the Philippines during the era of the Independence Missions, reflecting Kalaw’s lifelong dedication to self-government and the political and cultural advancement of the nation.
