Founded in 1948 by student editors Cesar Jalandoni Amigo and Aida Rivera Ford, alongside faculty advisers Rodrigo T. Feria and Dolores Stephens Feria, Sands & Coral is the oldest student-annual literary journal at Silliman University in Dumaguete City, Philippines. It serves as a foundational pillar of the institution's celebrated literary legacy and is closely intertwined with the historic Silliman National Writers Workshop. This specific publication is a milestone anthology designated as the "Centennial Issue," celebrating both over 50 years of the journal's existence and the 100th anniversary of Silliman University’s founding (1901–2001). Organized chronologically by decade from the 1940s to the 1990s, the issue anthologizes works, memoirs, and critical retrospectives from generational literary giants who shaped Philippine literature—including National Artist Edith L. Tiempo, Edilberto K. Tiempo, Aida Rivera Ford, Rowena Tiempo-Torrevillas, Jose Y. Dalisay Jr., and Marjorie Evasco. The text serves as a historical and cultural record of the evolution of Philippine creative writing in English and the long-standing tradition of New Criticism in the southern Philippines.
