This document is an official English translation of the Spanish Code of Commerce, originally sanctioned by King Alfonso XII of Spain on August 22, 1885, and extended to Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines in 1886 and 1888. The translation was commissioned and published by the U.S. War Department's Division of Customs and Insular Affairs in October 1899. Its creation was a direct administrative consequence of the Spanish-American War (1898), which resulted in the transfer of sovereignty of these territories to the United States. By translating the existing legal code, the U.S. Military Government was able to maintain the continuity of commercial, maritime, and procedural law while providing necessary legal tools for American administrators, military officers, and incoming businesses to govern and operate within the recently acquired or liberated territories.
Translation of the code of commerce in force in Cuba, Porto Rico, and the Philippines, amended by the law of June 10, 1897, including the Commercial Registry Regulations, Exchange Regulations, and other provisions of a similar character, with annotations and appendices
